Objectives

Welcome to the Writing Weeks – Your Creative Retreat for Academic Writing
Immerse yourself in an inspiring week dedicated entirely to writing! As part of our “Writing & Publishing” category, we offer four one-week retreats each year, organized by Freie Universität Berlin. This is your opportunity to enhance your writing skills and advance your individual projects.

Content

In a structured environment that combines thematic workshops with free writing phases, you will learn valuable tools and techniques for academic writing. The week is divided into three intensive days where you will not only refine your topic but also learn how to self-organize your writing process.
An experienced expert will accompany you throughout the retreat, offering individual counseling sessions. Additionally, you will have the chance to form writing groups with fellow participants, allowing for collaborative reflection on your progress.
Highlights of the Writing Weeks:

•    Deepening your topic exploration
•    Self-management strategies for the academic writing process
•    Techniques to combat procrastination
•    Peer feedback and group discussions

You can use the time to work on your individual writing project (e.g. your thesis or a journal article) during the week.

Additionally, rejoin the group for an one-hour timeslot to reflect. Reflective writing is not taught as an explicit writing skill. It is useful to reflect on your own writing. It can be helpful to hear other perspectives and to receive feedback on your own writing from people outside your field.

We recommend

Check out the series of short workshops that adresses different aspects of academic writing, such as the process of defining and scoping the topic, the management of the writing process (time management, writer’s block, procrastination etc.), the use of creative writing techniques, the construction of the introduction and the conclusion, and challenges in collaborative writing.
