Research Integrity: Introduction to Good Scientific Practice (with a focus on laboratory journals) - online NEW

The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) is an alliance of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Together, they are pursuing the goal of creating and shaping an integrated research space in Berlin. This alliance aims to establish Berlin as a leading international science location. All workshops and events offered by the Graduate Studies Support Program are funded by the BUA and therefore free of charge.

 

Participation

The seminar is aimed at doctoral researchers (all disciplines) of the Berlin University Alliance who want to learn about good scientific practice with regard to research data in general and laboratory journals in particular.

Objectives

In many empirical disciplines, work processes and results (both individual and collaborative) are documented in laboratory journals. Thus, laboratory journals are one of the foundations of scientific research that is based on data. Well-documented research data in turn is not only part of the reasoning for scientific statements, but also is the starting point for further (individual or collaborative) research. For this reason, the appropriate documentation of research data – and therefore also the correct handling of lab journals – is an important part of research integrity.

Content

The workshop will focus on the practice of keeping laboratory journals and will embed this topic within the requirements of good scientific practice for dealing with research data. These two core themes will be framed by an introduction to the topic of good scientific practice based on the recommendations of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and recommendations for dealing with breaches of research integrity.
The workshop informs participants about existing regulations and provides an opportunity to discuss their rationale and merits. Awareness of these issues will improve the participants' research practice and help them avoid scientific misconduct.
The workshop will be conducted online. Since its objective can only be achieved through active engagement of the participants with the topics covered, case studies, discussions, breakout group discussions and exercises will form the core of the event. Short lectures/presentations will be used to quickly convey information and to systematise/structure the more participative parts.

 

Please note

Two weeks before the workshop, participants will receive some assignments for preparation, which have to be completed until one week before the workshop (time required: approx. 1 hour).
