The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) is an alliance of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Together, they are pursuing the goal of creating and shaping an integrated research space in Berlin. This alliance aims to establish Berlin as a leading international science location. All workshops and events offered by the Graduate Studies Support Program are funded by the BUA and therefore free of charge.

Doctoral researchers (all disciplines) of the Berlin University Alliance.

Objectives

This course is designed for doctoral researchers writing their dissertations in English who intend to publish in English-language academic journals. Participants will become acquainted with the requirements and conventions of academic English, including academic vocabulary, register and structures, abstract composition, and metadiscourse. The minimum level of English required is B2+/C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

 

Content

Information sheets and academic writing examples, accompanied by lecture clarification, exercises, student-generated texts and discussion.

Methods

Weekly in-class writing, text presentation and critique, lecture, goal-directed exercises. Discussion of and response to student-generated texts will be included. The two-hour course will meet online for nine weeks.
